Early exploration of the region between Mt. Everest and Makalu was accomplished by traversing several high passes. This expedition will traverse the entire east-west length of the region, crossing some of the same passes and travelling many of the same routes as the explorers of the earlier parts of this century. The trek will start in the Arun valley on the way to Makalu and cross high-mountain passes to the heart of the Khumbu at the base of Mt. Everest, ending with a visit to Kala Pattar. We will have the chance to trek to the base of and climb Mera Peak (6,476 meters, 21,247 ft), cross the Mingbo La, climb Kala Pattar and visit Everest Base Camp. All of the peaks and passes can be avoided if someone is not feeling up to a particular challenge. This expedition is an excellent opportunity to explore this little traveled region of Nepal.
